OC-aquasil™ Tex - water repellents for nonwoven & technical textiles

Water repellents are frequently used in the technical textile and nonwoven industry. However, conventional water repellents are often based on fluorocarbons or per- and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), a group of substances that are bio-accumulative and suspected to be hormone disruptive. OrganoClick has developed the product range OC-aquasil™ Tex - a new water repellent technology that is non-toxic, biodegradable and completely free from fluorocarbons.

OC-aquasil™ Tex is a product range of water repellents for technical textiles and nonwoven that confers excellent water repellency, while being free from both fluorocarbons (PFCs), VOC, and isocyanates. It also protects textiles and nonwovens from water-based soiling such as stains from red wine, coffee, ketchup, etc. As the product is not film-forming, OC-aquasil™ Techtextil maintains the treated material’s appearance and its ability to let vapours through (i.e. its breathability). 

OC-aquasil™ Tex can be used both for woven and knitted textiles as well as nonwovens. If durability of the water repellent properties in washing machines is of importance such as for fabrics used in garments for professional use, OC-aquasil™ Tex 300 series (300-350) is the choice. If wash is not important such as in most nonwovens, OC-aquasil™  Techtextil (200/N2) is the choice. 

On woven and knitted textiles containing synthetic fibers OC-aquasil™  Tex 300 series confers a highly durable performance that withstands numerous cycles of home laundry and wear. Still, biodegradability is retained, thanks to OC-aquasil™  Tex 300 unique composition of plant-based catalysts and hydrophobic polymers. The hydrophobic polymers have two different ends; one pointing outwards that is highly water repellent and one that is reactive that binds to the textile fibers. When the reactive end is unbound (i.e. before the OC-aquasil™  Tex 300 is applied to the textile) it is biodegradable. However, in the presence of the plant-based catalysts, the reactive end binds to the textile fibers and it is then rendered non-degradable and becomes highly durable instead. 

On nonwoven material containing either cellulose-based or synthetic fibers, OC-aquasil™ Techtextile (200/N2), confers a high degree of water repellency without having to be cured at elevated temperatures. OC-aquasil™ Techtextile (200/N2) is self curing, which enables a very energy efficient finishing process. High temperature curing is however possible if rapid processing is required.
